The bomb was buried next to a shop in Tagab in Kapisa where any of the villagers could have set it off. Luckily a sharp-eyed local resident spotted what the insurgents were up to and called the police. His actions probably saved lives and highlighting the importance of civilian-police co-operation. Another bomb was also found and made safe in Nijrab district, again thanks to civilians helping the security forces.
“These new successes were achieved with the co-operation of the people,” said Ataaullah Kohistani, Deputy Chief of Police in Kapisa.
Rahman Gul, a 42-year-old store owner in Tageb, said: “The bomb was buried close to my shop, if it had gone off I might have died or been wounded. Thanks to Allah one of our villagers was worried about our safety and informed the ANP. They came very quickly and defused the bomb.”
, is a brave young officer, keen to do his police work to the best of his abilities.
“My job is to protect people. People’s lives are at stake and I must do my best. I have worked and trained hard for my job. I went to the Focused District Development programme (FDD) in Ghazni province and it made me even better at my job.”
His motivation and professionalism are not lost on the residents of Kapisa who still face threats from the enemies of Afghanistan who come down from the mountains to harass and threaten them. But the people of Kapisas have fought back and it is due to their co-operation with the ANP that the potentially lethal bombs were found and removed.
The security that the ANP provide to the people of Kapisa will only get better. According to Deputy Chief Kohistani more than 100 ANP officers have gone to Ghazni to receive advanced police training under the eight-week FDD programme. When they return, it will be with the professional skills to match their dedication to the people of Kapisa.
