Around Afghanistan the government is building and refurbishing parks. Often, within these parks, there are play areas for children.
Physical activity stimulates growth and leads to improved physical and mental health. Children learn a great deal through play and sport. These allow children to develop a better understanding of the world and their own body as well as encourage self-expression, self-esteem and risk-taking.
Physical exercise helps children to relax and sleep better and it increases a healthy stamina to prevent some illnesses. Sports are also considered to be a good defence against drug addiction, a major issue in some parts of Afghanistan. The body develops a natural aversion to sedatives and a person feels fit and active.
Children doing sports are successful at school because physical exercise increases concentration which in turn improves learning. Even moderate physical activity has been shown to improve children’s skills at mathematics, reading and memorization.
Children learn teamwork and leadership skills when they play with other children and do team sports such as cricket and football. Children who are competent at sports are more likely to be group leaders in the future.
To be able to gain all positive aspects of playing and sports, children have to be active every day. They should do at least 60 minutes of physical activity, including activity that makes them get out of breath, each day. This activity doesn’t all have to be done at once. It can be built up throughout the day by walking, active play at home and arranging football game with friends.
As socio-economic conditions have improved in Afghanistan, a large number of youths have a chance to join sports teams and clubs in the country. National sports officials are keen to encourage the youth to keep physically fit while pursuing their greater ambitions for a good education.
