President Hamid Karzai and his second vice President Mohammad Karim Khalili on Saturday exercised their vote right in the landmark presidential election and urged people to vote for a candidate of their choice.
The ballot process formally started at 7:00 am throughout the country.
“Today, Afghans are taking yet another step toward peace, progress and stability,” Karzai told reporters after casting his vote.
Ineligible to run for a third term, Karzai urged people to cast vote in large number which would help put the country on path to development and self reliance. People’s participation in the democratic exercise could pave ground for prosperity of the next generation, he added.
Khalili exercised his right of vote in the Habibia High School. After casting his vote, he asked people to take active part in the election which would ensure peace and stability in the country.
Chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) has formally started the voting process by casting his ballot soon after the kicking off of the process.
Frontrunners, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and his rival Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai are contesting the runoff ballot.
