45pc of Kabul votes reach IEC HQ

ballot-baxesThe Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday said 45 percent of the votes polled in the central capital Kabul had reached its headquarters.

IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor told reporters the vote-tallying process continued until 7pm across the country after voting in yesterday’s runoff election came to a close.
However, he said ballot boxes from some districts could take days reaching Kabul due to transportation problems and impassable roads.
“About 6,365 polling centres were set up for the runoff election but 140 of them remained closed for security reasons,” he said.
Of the closed sites, some stayed open until Saturday noon before being shut due to high security threats and Taliban attacks, Noor said.
He added a recount of votes arriving from provinces would be officially launched on Monday and media outlets and the two presidential candidates could observe the process.
On Saturday evening, IEC Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani said more than seven million people had participated in the runoff election
