The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) announced on Tuesday that all roads including the busy Salang highway would be kept open in the long winter season.
Ahmad Shah Waheed, director of maintenance at MoPH, told a press conference in Kabul precautionary measures had already been put in place in 23 sensitive provinces to make sure no road was blocked by snow.
He informed contracts had been signed with private companies to clear major roads of snow. Waheed added some 300 susceptible points had been identified.
The MoPW official acknowledged some 60 points, including the famous Salang pass, could be problematic. Calling Salang pass an all-weather problem for transporters, he said good planning had ensured zero casualties.
The 109 kilometer long highway connects the capital Kabul with nine northern provinces and requires reconstruction at some points.
