During a recent visit to Nimroz province, H.E. Eng. Nasir Ahmad Durrani, the Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD), marked the completion of the first-phase of the Zaranj Water Supply Project and handed it over to the people in Zaranj, the provincial capital.
The first phase of the Zaranj Water Supply Project included the excavation of eight deep wells together with the provision and installation of other necessary equipment, including a pump room, a water pump and generator, extension of the pipes network and the construction of two water reservoirs. The first phase of this project has been completed in 33 months with a budget of USD $13.1 million.
Inaugurating the second phase of the project, Minister Durrani said, “As the Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, I emphasize that no effort will be spared to transparently and effectively implement the second phase of this important project. The water supply will be completed in 18 months and the residents of Zaranj will have improved access to potable water. I request civil society, the media and, most importantly, the local people to help us with the implementation of the second phase of this project.”
The second phase will be implemented with a budget of USD $8.4 million and includes the 240 km extension of the pipe network in the villages around Zaranj, construction of a 500 cubic meter water reservoir/distributor and the construction of a three-storey building for the Water Supply and Canalization Directorate.
